Forest Fires Resulting in Travel Advisory for North of Superior

July 18, 2011

Parts of Northwestern Ontario have been struck by a number of major forest fires. Extensive media coverage throughout Canada and possibly in the United States will likely leave the impression that all of this area is experiencing this fire situation.  I wish to advise you that the NOSTA area (primarily the District of Thunder Bay) does not have any active fires that will affect your travel plans.  Highways 61, 11 and 17 throughout the entire Northwest (from the Manitoba Border to Sault Ste Marie and to the USA border are fully operational.  Also, the highways that head north from 11 & 17 from Thunder Bay to Sault Ste Marie are operational.

That being said, many of our tourism communities are hosting evacuees from the far north communities and hotel and motel rooms may be at a premium so you need to call ahead to secure your overnight accommodation. There is no change in availability for our outfitters or campgrounds as they are not involved in housing the evacuees.
