For those with a fascination for living history, step back in time to experience the adventure, conflict and romance of Canada’s fur trade days at impressive Fort William Historical Park, winner of the Attractions Canada Award of Excellence.
Museums throughout the region offer glimpses of the past, focusing on farming, sports, military or woodlands history.

If you would like to have a piece of amethyst, Ontario’s official gemstone, visit one of the region’s amethyst mines. They contain some of the largest amethyst deposits in North America.
From art galleries to outdoor nature parks, zoos and carnival rides to hiking across Canada’s longest suspension bridge, there’s lots to do in the North of Superior Region.
| Amethyst Mine Panorama | |  Amethyst Mine Panorama is the largest deposit in North America. It was discovered in 1955 as a result of a road being built to the forest fire lookout tower (McTavish Tower) visible from the mine sight. Amethyst production started in 1960 and the mine has produced continuously since then.
The mine produces 40% usable amethyst by volume. A large digging area, open to the public, contains 20% usable amethyst and is the main source of “pick your own” amethysts. Open from May to October. | | |
| Lake Superior Art Gallery | |  Lake Superior Art Gallery is located in one of Thunder Bay's heritage buildings, the F. W. Woolworth building, located at 605 East Victoria Avenue. The gallery role is to display visual art from around the Lake Superior region with a primary goal of providing a venue for regional visual artists to display and sell their art work. | Intercity Shopping Centre | |  Intercity Shopping Centre is Thunder Bay's largest shopping centre with over 450,000 square feet of retail and office space.
With its focus on fashion, Intercity's 100 stores and services include famous brand names such as American Eagle, West 49, Homesense and Sport Chek. It is ideally located in the city core at the corner of the Harbour Expressway and Fort William Road, with easy access from all highways and major city arteries.

| Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame & Museum | |  The Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame & Museum celebrates the rich sports heritage of the region. Visitors can view a variety of artifacts on display and learn about the many Hall of Fame members who have brought pride to the region through their accomplishments in sport. This heritage facility is wheelchair accessible and air-conditioned and is located in downtown Thunder Bay South, in close proximity to City Hall and the Thunder Bay Museum.
