Stretching from west of Thunder Bay to Kakabeka Falls, the Municipality of Oliver Paipoonge ranks, by area, among the largest municipalities in the Thunder Bay district. Established on January 1, 1998, through amalgamation of the Township of Oliver and the Township of Paipoonge, Oliver Paipoonge is a region of startling contrasts. Within its 350 square kilometres, the municipality encompasses both vast stretches of pristine wilderness and one of the most beautiful natural phenomenons in Canada – Kakabeka Falls. Kakabeka Falls
Often referred to as the Niagara of the north, Kakabeka Falls are worth the 20 mile visit west of Thunder Bay. Appropriately, the word “Kakabeka” means “water running over sheer cliffs”. Indeed, water thunders over sheer cliffs into an impressive gorge before flowing to Lake Superior.
The falls are magnificent and powerful, as water gushes over a 131-foot steep wall of a canyon. Their display creates a thundering sound! You can enjoy the view from various vantages along the boardwalk and observation pods. Swimming, camping, picnicking and hiking are all nearby.
A hiking trail exists whereby you can retrace the steps made by voyageurs on the fur trade route from Montreal to the West. The flow of water is best in spring and on weekends – the flow is reduced during the week.
Kamistiquia River and River Rat Rentals Tubing
The Kaministiquia River which empties into western Lake Superior at the City of Thunder Bay is an Ojibwe word meaning “river with islands” due to two large islands at the mouth of the river.
It is also the home of our local lazy river with our River Rat Rental tubing experience.
It’s the perfect way to enjoy a hot summer day. Float down the Kam River and experience a new pastime. Relax for a few hours and take in the natural scenic beauty of the Kam River.

Golfing
WhiteWaterGolf Club
Combine the powerful presence of the Kaministiqua in the River course with the serenity and majesty of the Forest course and you have 18 of the best golf holes anywhere to challenge even the most skilled golfer. With beautiful, rugged northern Ontario scenery and challenging golf at every hole you will fully appreciate the Whitewater experience by taking on the full course at Whitewater Golf Club.
